MAJOR MISTAKES THAT SHOULD BE AVOIDED |
|
In writing a resume, the following mistakes should be avoided:
1. Grammatical Errors
In making a good first impression, it is necessary that the resume, which serves as a selling tool of the applicant, should be well written with the proper grammar and punctuations. Typographical errors should also be avoided. There is a need to intricately review and proofread the resume before submission.
2. Mismatched Qualifications
The indicated qualifications and skills should match the needs of the employer. There are those who simply submit a resume without taking into consideration the specifications of the employer. This will prove to be a turn off to the company.
3. Irrelevant Information
There are times when a resume is filled with irrelevant information and lacking in the important details. The applicant should see to it that all the relevant information is present in the resume while cutting out irrelevant passages.
4. Incorrect Contact Details
The applicant should pay attention to the contact details as this will be the employers key in reaching the applicant. The numbers should be correct and functional.
5. Not self-centered content
The resume should not be written in a self-centered form; instead it should be employer-centered. It should be devised in such a way that the applicant is offering them something rather than wanting something from the company.
6. Too Broad
The resume should not be too broad. It should be specific enough for the employer to know the specific qualifications of the applicant. Writing in broad and general terms will not impress the employer as there is no indication how the applicant can stand above the rest.
7. Font and Paper
The font used on the resume should be simple, not those artistic or curvy ones. There should only be one font style and words should not be italicized, underlined or created in bold face if not necessary. The paper should also be white paper, not glittery or scented ones and black should be the flat color to preserve the formal look.
8. Telling lies
No lies or exaggeration should be made in writing resumes. The applicant should only stick to what is true because this document will be a part of the company files and if in case the applicant gets hired due to misrepresentation this might lead to termination.
9. Cover letter
Always attach a cover letter. This is one way of impressing the employer.
